River - Looking for words...

It's all for OUR dogs...

Our goal: To find a producer or celeb or anyone who will help make Piper's Someday  (the book River stars in) into a movie. If you can help, contact me!

Day 74 of 365

Here's how the story begins:   (start here if you are new)

http://ruthperkinson.blogspot.com/2011/01/day-1-of-365anyone-want-to-come-along.html)

River's wags of wisdom for today: "Somedays, it's hard to find the right words."

Today was another twelve hour day in training as an independent insurance agent. I selected this as I love the product and truly want to help people. All day long, I visited clients and told them of the no-brainer policies we sell and endorse. It's a great thing to do, especially for the blue collar laborer who needs it. We cover 1 out of 4 households in Japan...they certainly need us now.

River stayed back today and I came home once to let her out then I was back out at a function called the Richmond Business Alliance. It was a great way to connect with businesses and to hob-knob with potential clients.

A lady there was selling Shaklee products and wants to be a writer. I gave her my card and told her to call me and I would help her all I could. I hope she does...she feels the call and I understand that.

This is the business I love - just helping people. And, helping our canine friends.

When I turned around in the line I was standing in, I spotted an old friend named Gail. I haven't seen her in probably twelve, maybe thirteen years. One of the first questions out of her mouth was, "how's River doing?"

Our blog is getting out because you are helping...touche.

Today, I say thank you to my 38 followers and to the people who know that a movie about Piper's Someday would be a firecracker to help raise awareness about canine cancer and three-legged prophetic pooches.

Love,

Ruth and River

River awaiting a treat, I think...

Love, love...

River - Pray for your Boyfriend: Duffy

It's all for OUR dogs...

Our goal: To find a producer or celeb or anyone who will help make Piper's Someday  (the book River stars in) into a movie. If you can help, contact me!

Day 73 of 365

Here's how the story begins:   (start here if you are new)

http://ruthperkinson.blogspot.com/2011/01/day-1-of-365anyone-want-to-come-along.html)

River's wags of wisdom for today: "Send good vibes to Duffy."

Today, we are sending good vibes of doggiedom to Duffy - the male dog who lives next door to us. Duffy had ACL surgery on his rear right leg and now has to turn around a week later and have surgery on his rear left leg. He tore the new one late this past week.

Duffy and Bogey (River's boyfriend) live with their very sweet owner. He let's River come over and play with both his dogs nearly every day as he works from home.
We had a chinwag over the high cost of animal care today as I readied for work.

River is lying behind me after a long day of getting out with my trainer and helping the common man with our employee programs and benefits. It's a great product and I'm glad to be helping people with figuring out how to handle the bills. I hope at some point, my company will offer the same for pet health care. Cool idea, eh. I've heard wishy washy stuff about pet insurance...but if anyone knows any differently, let me know.

My day has dragged on and I'm beat. River is telling me to go to bed and get a good night's sleep before we wake up and do it all over again, tomorrow.

She's a good girl. She keeps me on track when I often feel derailed.

Love for tonight...good vibes to the Duff-Meister!

River's wags of wisdom for today: "Tricky, real tricky."

Today we have some tubage. Notice how her belly looks in this footage...this is where she looks like she's swallowed a goat. But, her trick abilities are on target...as you'll see.

For today, love to all of you!

River - Simplicity is Key!

It's all for OUR dogs...

Our goal: To find a producer or celeb or anyone who will help make Piper's Someday  (the book River stars in) into a movie. If you can help, contact me!

Day 71 of 365

Here's how the story begins:   (start here if you are new)

http://ruthperkinson.blogspot.com/2011/01/day-1-of-365anyone-want-to-come-along.html)

River's wags of wisdom for today: "All my furry life, it's just the simple things."

River loves yogurt.

Whenever Heather or I get a cup out and delve into one, River is usually lying on the carpet next to the sofa. As you near the end of the cup, which takes me usually two minutes or less, River can sense you're almost done by perking her head up and pointing it pointedly in your direction. Her ears go all Sally Field and she's ready for your imminent spoon clacking to get louder as you reach the bottom. This begins her journey your way to grab gingerly the empty cup from your hands and then to lie down and do the two-paw hold to lick in ecstasy.

Don't you wish humans were this easy. Maybe if we got a bit more humble like Oliver Twist - "Please, sir...more!" while holding out his empty bowl of gruel. But, of course, Oliver gets more than what he truly asks for and therefore unleashes a journey of a lifetime. In Dickensian times, we did not have Stonyfield Vanilla yogurt, just a bit of bread and some porridge and a piece of dried meat if you could get some.

River always gets more these days if she asks. Willingly, we take her to Einstein's Bagelry for a dog biscuit or take her for a sniff-filled walk or we just a scratch her on her belly as she's lying on one of her queen bee mattresses.

River doesn't need much nor does she ask for much. Dogs are imminently like this. By and large they just want to please us and help us and walk with us on our journeys. They are here, I'm sure, to aid humans in the exorbitant tolls of life, day by day.

I thought before I had River that I knew all that there was to know about what a dog did. But, watching her entire body get excited over a few licks of joy at the bottom of a yogurt container. Wow!

Tomorrow, when I hold a paper clip, I will think of the art I can manifest, the silver wiggles and sculpts I can bend into a limitless vein of silver that arcs wildly in the light.

We love you,

Ruth and River

Please send us your pictures for the Ellen and Oprah Montage!!!

River - Love your Neighbor!

It's all for OUR dogs...

Our goal: To find a producer or celeb or anyone who will help make Piper's Someday  (the book River stars in) into a movie. If you can help, contact me!

Day 70 of 365

Here's how the story begins:   (start here if you are new)

http://ruthperkinson.blogspot.com/2011/01/day-1-of-365anyone-want-to-come-along.html)

River's wags of wisdom for today: "Romp, stomp, jump, wag, vah, vah voom!"

River played or rather showed off today in the yard for her best friend neighbor, Augie. Augie is a smith of all trades and has a workshop in the back where he molds and shapes wood for guns.

For some reason, when he is outside, River goes nuts like when she sees an errant squirrel. She runs to the fence and barks at Augie, "Hey, Hey, Hey...I'm right here. Hey!" And then Augie comes over and pets her till she's satisfied enough. She not only flirts with the backdoor neighbor dogs and the side door neighbor dogs, but she flirts with Augie. She loves to have him scratch her ears and neck and he does so lovingly and willingly.

Augie does not know that I blog about River or that we have a vision quest. I leave that to my online friends and to the ones who have known River since I first got her. He just loves on her and she loves it. In the middle of the night sometimes when I have to get up and let her out, she will run to that side of the yard and bark, hoping Augie will awaken and come out in his slippers and give her a pat or two on the head.

Of course, I shush her all the way back in the house with my sweatshirt on and in my oversized boxer shorts and barefeet. We have a bit of a circus sometimes at two in the morning. Reminds me of the good ole days in college but without all the beer and strange people.

Heather just kicked on the air conditioner as it got to over 80 degrees in Richmond today. The house is warm and River is panting...so, of course, we do things in line with what she needs. Heather is sweet that way.

At two this morning, I will awaken, freezing and put on my sweatpants, my sweatshirt, and my northface jacket just to walk to the back door to let River out for her bark at Augie and my shushing.

In Virginia, we do a lot of things in reverse. When the A/C hits, I head for the feetie pajamas and hot chocolate. River will bask on the hardwood floors and dream of an errant midnight squirrel perhaps, and a trip to the fence.

Till tomorrow,

Love your animals and send us your pics!

River - Sometimes a sick day interrupts life...

It's all for OUR dogs...

Our goal: To find a producer or celeb or anyone who will help make Piper's Someday  (the book River stars in) into a movie. If you can help, contact me!

Day 68 and 69 of 365

Here's how the story begins:   (start here if you are new)

http://ruthperkinson.blogspot.com/2011/01/day-1-of-365anyone-want-to-come-along.html)

River's wags of wisdom for today: "Mom gets bad migraines...shhhh."

This blog certainly is not about me, but I have to say, if I left it to River or the cat, not much would get typed. There would be cat tracks on the keyboard and River might lick the crumbs near the mouse where I do most of my nibbling.

Migraines are madness. The last one happened Tuesday...I just got up around noon today. My mom says I need to go to the doctor. I just want to get my new insurance business up and running. So if you are a business owner in Virginia and you want to increase your bottomline by providing a great supplement to your employees. CALL ME. I will help you...I'm in the business of helping people...804.405.3201.

I'm certainly in the business of helping my dog and your dog, too. I took River for a walk around the block just a bit ago and it still looks as if she's eaten a goat. The back leg looks really go though and she sniffed and stopped and ran and walked like a good shepherd "hopper" should.

River-hopper. That's a good nickname.

Now she's lying behind my chair, panting a bit. When I stop to look at her, she wags her tail - a soft tap on the rug she lies on.

We may do the park tomorrow. I need batteries for the camera...so, maybe we will make it to the outing and I can film it.

I have about five pictures to post of animals...so, if you want to send yours to me, that would be great! I'm waiting till we get close to 20 or so before I put something together for Oprah and Ellen...so, send those pictures in to Facebook...just send me a message or to my e-mail which is posted on Facebook, too.

Love to you today as we crawl from underneath the rock,

Ruth and River

River's wags of wisdom for today: "Sometimes your communication has to be short and sweet."

Today I have to go to the eye doctor and get my eyes checked out. This means that they will dilate them so that I look like a vampire and then they will take laser pictures of them to see if a nuclear bomb has gone off inside.

Many of you know that my eyes have been compromised. I can still see with both eyes open...but reading is sometimes a struggle.

My mother is going to be here in about seven minutes but I at least wanted to touch base and say that I would be out of pocket till tomorrow. The vampire in me takes hours to wear off and I won't be able to see to blog. But, just know that I will be able to see you...he, he, he.

Love to all those who keep up. I hope your lives are safe, healthy, and happy. I hope your animals are the same.

Till tomorrow,

Love,

Ruth and River

River's wags of wisdom for today: "Wave your tail in honor of one of your lost friends."

Thanks to those of you who have been sending in pics of your wonderful furry canine friends. I will collect them and put them in a montage once I get some more in. I will only put your first names tagged to them unless you tell me otherwise.

We are progressing in our days, River and me. She's still gaining weight and panting, but we have her on some pain meds and will do that ultrasound next time we go in. My hope is that it's just Cushing's disease which can be managed with medication.

Today was a blah day. Monday. River sat behind me as I did work on a spreadsheet for most of the day. I got a note from one of our followers that she lost her dog, Indy this morning. He was fifteen. This particular follower has been very supportive of our cause having given money to Fetchacure in River's honor and giving me words of wisdom each week. I keep her Anonymous per her request...I'll just call her B.

B. is a great dog owner and I want her to know that if our dreams come true...she's top of the list to make it to our big day. We are still searching, digging, sniffing out the ways to find a celeb or producer or anyone who can connect us to Hollywood. The book is done, we just need the ear of a willing producer.

We are signing off because of stuffy heads and sore necks (too much typing). River says, "love, love" to her furry friend she never met - Indy. Good boy. I'm sure River would have flirted with him.

Go, Indy, Go...we love you!

Ruth and River

River - Today, Grandma needs some help...

It's all for OUR dogs...

Our goal: To find a producer or celeb or anyone who will help make Piper's Someday  (the book River stars in) into a movie. If you can help, contact me!

Day 66 of 365

Here's how the story begins:   (start here if you are new)

http://ruthperkinson.blogspot.com/2011/01/day-1-of-365anyone-want-to-come-along.html)

River's wags of wisdom for today: "When you get excited about going to the park...hold tight, something may interrupt the plan."

This morning, I awoke to a beautiful sun shiny day. The air quickly got warm and I drank coffee and watched my favorite Sunday morning show on CBS. River ate with gusto and we did a twicer out the back door before I settled in with a bucket of cereal laden with milk. I usually eat it and then River gets to lick the bowl.

This morning, Heather got up late and we both decided to take River to the park for the first time in months. We made a plan to go to PetSmart to get her a special bootie for her and to buy batteries for the camera so we can begin to make a video montage. Already we have some pictures to post of other pooches but want to make it one big gig...

This morning, just as we were getting ready to go, my grandmother's assisted living facility called. She'd fallen and hit her head and her left leg was causing her some pain. Grandma is 92 and has severe dementia. A bit after the fall, she couldn't even remember doing it.

We hustled River outside for a bathroom break and then hustled to the assisted living facility. Grandma (or Amma as I call her), was looking all right, but we decided it best to go to the ER and get her totally cat scanned to make sure.

I road in ambulance with her so that she would understand and not be afraid. Of course, when we got to the ER, you can imagine that they were full up and Amma was low on the totem pole. We were there from noon till after 4 p.m. By the time we got her home, it was close to 5 p.m. She checked out fine...it was good to be sure.

River didn't go to the park today. But, that's okay, sometimes other things and people take precedence.

When River was having surgery, I remember Amma saying she would pray for her. "Write it on a piece of paper!" she demanded. I did. I wrote in big letters, "Pray for River during her surgery and after."

Amma said, "I will." Then she added, "that's for damn sure." Go, Amma!

River just sidled up to me and is panting and nudging for me to get off the computer and spend some time with her. So, I will.

Love to you today...please send me your dog pics!!! Let's all shout out to Ellen and Oprah that River and Ruth need their "pull" in Hollywood.

Love

Ruth and River

River - Love to Amelia Newsom

It's all for OUR dogs...

Our goal: To find a producer or celeb or anyone who will help make Piper's Someday  (the book River stars in) into a movie. If you can help, contact me!

Day 65 of 365

Here's how the story begins:   (start here if you are new)

http://ruthperkinson.blogspot.com/2011/01/day-1-of-365anyone-want-to-come-along.html)

River's wags of wisdom for today: "Remember your friends."

Today, Heather and I went to Amelia Newsom's memorial service in Deltaville, Virginia. A small fishing community composed of some very sweet southern people who Amelia touched in her 67 years with us. There and in Richmond.

I never met Amelia. I just know her daughter, Linda. Linda is a close friend and her partner Lori is as well. They both have touched me in more ways than I can count.

When Piper's Someday was released in 2007, Linda and Lori were at the forefront of helping to get the release party underway. We partnered with the Richmond Organization for Sexual Minority Youth and Linda and Lori were there with me every step of the way while we filled out addresses, sent invitations, and made party plans.

Having Linda there was like having, I don't know, a steadfast pillar of love, kindness, and support. She's a genius with a spreadsheet and is quite beautiful and funny.

I imagine she got this kind of genuine hardwork and tenacity and devotion from her mother. You see, the church today was filled with over 250 people and Heather and I sat in the balcony. I sat in awe as I peered over the congregation below, shoulder to shoulder.

Amelia read my books. This is the one thing I knew for sure besides the testimonials that were spoken about or read from the altar. I watched her husband of 48 years and their children (Linda and Lori side by side) in the front row. Every now and again, Lori would put her arm around Linda and I would see the oldest son put his arm around his father.

Today, I drove back to Richmond with Heather and felt a lightness about us. We stopped in Urbanna and had a late, late lunch. The waitress fed us cheesburgers and turkey with gravy and mashed potatoes. We watched the tragedy of the tsunami unfold on CNN.

When the sun set today, I thought of my friend - Linda. I think of her and how the ripple effect of what we all do comes from the people who encircle us.

My mother took care of River today while we were gone. My mother is 72 years old. She's my best friend. Amelia was Linda's best friend.

I wish we had all met one another.

In spirit, I guess, we have already.

Love to Amelia today and all that she did for the goodness of our planet,

Ruth and River

River says, "I love you, Amelia...thank you for reading the books!"

River - Calling on Oprah or Ellen or someone on their staff!

It's all for OUR dogs...

Our goal: To find a producer or celeb or anyone who will help make Piper's Someday  (the book River stars in) into a movie. If you can help, contact me!

http://ruthperkinson.blogspot.com/2011/01/day-1-of-365anyone-want-to-come-along.html)

River's wags of wisdom for today: "Or call Oprah..."
A reader on Facebook suggested we contact the Oprah staff as well...okay, I'm listening. I think it's a great idea but connecting with either Ellen or Oprah seems almost impossible.

But, I think with your help, we can do it. While I think that it is completely viable, I also know I can't do it flying solo. I need or rather River needs a little help from her canine friends.

So, with that in mind, I thought that we could get a montage of our dogs together that says, "Please listen..." or something like that. I could try and put it together in a You Tube video if you all would like to send in your names, the names of your dogs, or the names of your veterinary practice who supports our cause.

It's coming from that authentic place...

Send me your pics of your pooches or your name and we can say, "Ellen or Oprah, can you hear our unified wags?"

I think it will help. Keep it simple.

We have some video for today. Short and sweet.

Love to you all,

Ruth and River

River's wags of wisdom for today: "Call Ellen or something."

Today, River had chemo treatment number three. Something feels different with her and I can't put my finger on it. Dr. Fulmer was informative and understanding. She told me that the signs she's exhibiting are probably exclusive of the cancer and it may be something else. Cushings was a word she brought up...it is treatable. We may do an ultrasound next time to see what's going on with her adrenal glands, etc.

I drank a smoothie and talked to a guy next to me. His dog Katie, a black lab, was next in line for chemo after River. Her cancer was in her anal glands, I believe. Her backside was shaved. She sidled up to me a few times and we had a nice visit. The owner was very sweet and said he was there because he wanted to make sure that they got it all after all of the surgery.

River's in the same boat.

People I keep talking to keep saying I should contact Ellen DeGeneres. Let me tell you...over the years, I have written to her about GLBT issues and I have written to her thanking her for her contributions to the GLBT community. Heather (my partner) sent her my first book, Vera's Still Point...even before she was my partner - nice chick, eh? And, earlier on in this blog, I reached out on her site and other people have as well.

She could surely help and my cousin suggested I send her a book and a letter. I can do this if I had a street address, I guess. No problem. I will google around to see if I can find one. I guess I can send it to the Warner Brothers Studio in L.A. in her name. If anyone of you reading this can find an address, then let me know. Thanks...

I feel that making a movie about my second book can raise awareness and money for the canine cause. River is the mascot leading the way...at least from my corner, my vantage point.

She lies very still next to me as I write this...I dream of a day when someone will take notice of this great story and how it resonates from the heart.

I'm bouncing around a bit here, but the neatest thing that happened today was a young, sweet technician came bouncing out of the back room when River and I came in. She said to me, "Were you driving to Richmond from Norfolk on I-64 on Sunday?" I said, "Yes, I was!" She then jumped up and down and said that she saw the bumper sticker we have on the back of Heather's car. "I saw the bumper sticker!" she exclaimed.

We embraced. A connection miles away on a highway via a bumper sticker I got off of vistaprint.

Anyone want a bumper sticker???

Love,

Ruth and River

The above pic shows the bumper sticker that Heather and I both have on our cars...we still want those dog stories. Bring them on!

Love, love!

River - Home Alone...

It's all for OUR dogs...

Our goal: To find a producer or celeb or anyone who will help make Piper's Someday  (the book River stars in) into a movie. If you can help, contact me!

Day 61 of 365

Here's how the story begins:   (start here if you are new)

http://ruthperkinson.blogspot.com/2011/01/day-1-of-365anyone-want-to-come-along.html)

River's wags of wisdom for today: "When you're home alone, take a pain pill and put your legs in the air."

River is back on some pain medication. So, I gave her the pleasure pill this morning with her food and it takes the edge off some of the agitation she's been having over the past week.

Agitation. Wow. I wish I had a pain pill for that one. I don't drink or smoke but I do find solace in a whole row of saltine crackers sometimes. Usually, one for me then one for River. The cat stays away and watches us revel in the salt, the bread, and the fun crunch. We can make it through a whole row in about twenty minutes.

Food is good. Pain medication is good. River is nudging me as I write this.

After a long day with the new job, I will turn in early this evening.

We're looking for answers, looking for leads, looking for a way to connect with readers everywhere.

Piper's Someday is a really good book. I was just the conduit for it. I do not "own" it nor pretend to just because my name is on the cover. The essence came to me and to River long before we even knew it was coming.

There is a plan. I'm just going with my gut and going with one magical dog.

River - Sending Pee-Mail

It's all for OUR dogs...

Our goal: To find a producer or celeb or anyone who will help make Piper's Someday  (the book River stars in) into a movie. If you can help, contact me!

Day 60 of 365

Here's how the story begins:   (start here if you are new)

http://ruthperkinson.blogspot.com/2011/01/day-1-of-365anyone-want-to-come-along.html)

River's wags of wisdom for today: "Even if you slow down a bit - still do the activities you enjoy."

Today, I had to do some more training for my new insurance gig. I'm now an insurance agent...whoo hoo. I feel like I need a special hat or lapel pin or something.

River is to the left of me as I write this. She had her surgery on December 14th...in a week it will be three months. Don't check my math nor my dates - I'm bad at them both.

I did get a note back from a literary agent today who is going to Book Expo America in a few months. She said she would keep her ears pealed to see if anyone was/might be interested in the story. Sometimes I feel like I'm shooting in the dark, however, I'm following up on all the leads that are given to me.

Like Wayne Dyer says, if you're traveling at night from New York to Los Angeles, the most you can see is just a few lighted feet at a time.

That's how I see this...a few steps at a time. While things right now seem to be slow, I will take the time to listen to the readers who read this and to the stories that are told to me when I chat about River and our vision quest.

If anyone out there has an idea...no matter how small...please send it our way.

Here's a shot of River sending some Pee-mail today.

For today - love, love,

Ruth and River

River - Fun for the rest of my life!

It's all for OUR dogs...

Our goal: To find a producer or celeb or anyone who will help make Piper's Someday  (the book River stars in) into a movie. If you can help, contact me!

Day 59 of 365

Here's how the story begins:   (start here if you are new)

http://ruthperkinson.blogspot.com/2011/01/day-1-of-365anyone-want-to-come-along.html)

River's wags of wisdom for today: "When your moms go out of town, be good with the dogsitter and don't keep her up all night with sniffs, bathroom requests, and heavy panting."

It's good to count on people. My friend Lee is so reliable, sweet, and good to River. I ask her to dog sit sometimes and she always, always shows up. Lee is one of the smartest, sweetest people I know. She helped me move last summer and has dog sat for our Massachusetts trip and then our California trip.

Last night, Heather and I wanted to go dancing and get the heck out of Richmond. We landed an hour and a half a way at the Residence Inn Marriott. The highlight of the evening was eating at a restaurant called the Freemason Abbey. There was a bartender there by the name of Fleur and she was very sweet and friendly and wonderful. Heather and I had great conversation and then we went to the gay bar in Norfolk. They were having a drag show that night...not much dancing...and so we gave away some dollars and drove home late - about 1:00 a.m.

I haven't been up that late in a long time. We reeked of smoke, so we took showers and landed in bed. I was sorry we couldn't slow dance like Heather wanted but know that we can get to GCLS in June and do some slow dancing there. For those of you who don't know, GCLS is a literary society for lesbian literature. I write some of dat.

On the way home, I told Heather that I want River to have a really good life for what is left of it. I also told her that I don't want her to suffer. I'm worried about the extra water intake and the liver values being so high and the other values off. She seems panty, agitated (at night mostly), and not her usual self. So, my worry-o-meter has gone up a bit. When I see the oncologist this week, I want to have a "chinwag" with her to see what we can do to make all of River's days comfortable.

I wish River could talk and tell me what's making her uncomfortable. I wish all dogs could share more with their owners...but, we watch for the signs and then do what we think is best. River will never suffer. My other dog, Scout, as far as I know did not suffer unduly. I believe it is our role as the "owner" to get them to heaven before the suffering even begins.

The pain is gone because her rear leg has been amputated. Once she healed enough past the surgery (which wasn't long), she returned to the rompy, stick chewing, tail wagging, funny beast that she is.

In my eyes, that is how she will always remain.

Heather and I got away for a night. I've come home to River after a slight breather and I told her everything I've just told you.

For the rest of her life...fun, fun, fun. If we get a movie made in the next few years, or five, or ten...it doesn't really matter. It's about loving a magical dog.

All of our dogs are magical. Don't you think?

For now, love, love,

Ruth and River
p.s. Heather and I slow danced in the hallway here at the house;) We can go backwards fairly well.

River - Loping along on a Saturday

Day 58 of 365

Here's how the story begins:   (start here if you are new)

http://ruthperkinson.blogspot.com/2011/01/day-1-of-365anyone-want-to-come-along.html)

River's wags of wisdom for today: "It's okay if you don't want to go home sometimes."

Today, I took River for a walk and she seems as if she wants to go elsewhere...I did a bit of videotaping to get it all on film. She was being quite obstinate and didn't want to return to the abode. Perhaps it is because she knows that Heather and I are going out of town for just tonight and returning early tomorrow. Dogs sense this way before you even get your backpack out to pack.

It will be my first time away from her since October. Heather and I both decided a night away of clubbing would be a great idea.

So, we got the best dog-sitter...our friend, Lee, and River adores her. We know she's in good hands.

Pass along the blog if you like. Today's video is more of a status than anything. We're hoping that someone will connect with River's story. I checked our pageviews (the stats that show how we are doing...we're up to over 3,000 pageviews since we started). If we could make that 300,000, I think that would be amazing.

Let me know your dog stories and ideas. Till tomorrow, here's some tubage:

It's actually the 5th...got my date wrong...

Love to you all,

Ruth and River

River - Doing Okay...

Day 57 of 365

Here's how the story begins:   (start here if you are new)

http://ruthperkinson.blogspot.com/2011/01/day-1-of-365anyone-want-to-come-along.html)

River's wags of wisdom for today: "On off days...lay low."

Today, River is okay. She has some elevated values but her urine sample checked out okay. When we go to chemo next week, our oncologist will do some more tests to check her out.

My vet and the oncologist have to synch up and compare notes. For right now, River seems to be okay. Heather and I are checking in on her throughout the day and so has my mom.

We dog owners are doters...looking, watching for any signs that something might be up. For River right now, she's drinking lots of water and seems to be panting more than usual. Plus her body looks really bloated.

We'll keep watch.

I'm keeping the blog short today as I've had some sad news that my very good friend Linda Newsom lost her mother today. I blogged about Amelia Newsom a few weeks ago because her son was donating part of his liver so that she could live. The surgery went well but Amelia was in a coma until today.

So, to our dog lovers, Linda and Lori, both River and Heather and I say, "we're sorry!" "We're sorry about your sweet mother passing on."

That's all for today. Just send good thoughts, vibes, prayers or whatever into the universe for Amelia Newsom's sweet soul and for her family.

Off to dote on my dog.

Love to you all,

Ruth and River

River - New tests...

Remember the Goal

Day 56 of 365

Here's how the story begins:   (start here if you are new)

http://ruthperkinson.blogspot.com/2011/01/day-1-of-365anyone-want-to-come-along.html)

River's wags of wisdom for today: "When you exhibit unusual behavior, let mom take you to the vet."

Like many of you, I have a great veterinarian who has been handling my dogs for years. Her name is Dr. Carolyn Evans and her practice is Quioccasin Veterinary Hospital here in Richmond. I live very close and took River by today because the scab at her incision site had completely healed and it was *gross* hanging on to one of the ten or so staples she still needed to have come out.

I also noticed that she was drinking more water than normally and seemed bloated. If you refer to Monday's blog, you'll see her "goat bloat" as I named it. When I took her in, I asked Dr. Evans to check her out to see if I was just dreaming it up. You know how we can dote.

Well, a blood test later revealed that some of her liver values were high and then they asked for a urine sample. Since I just blogged about urine yesterday, I thought it to be a bit apropos. So, I ran around the yard following River with a plastic container to get the sample.

When a dog has three legs...there are some fringe benefits with getting a sample...once she squatted and started...no problem.

Tonight, I'm a bit worried, I won't lie to you. River has been through a lot and has a strong will to live but I know that cancer is tricky and that complications are part of the journey.

You, the reader of this blog, is what we both live for every day. River, every day, sits behind my chair as I write this out and I tell her that she is changing the world.

I'm worried about her health and what the results will be tomorrow from the urinalysis and what the oncologist will tell Dr. Evans; however, I know my dog has a strong spirit and she's still eating her food like its the happiest time of her day.

So, my mom said to me - "one thing at a time."

Today, I will listen to her and go be with River and Heather.

Thank you for your support.

Love,

Ruth and River

All of the staples are out, now I just need to work on that reflection in her eyes...or, maybe not.

Love, Love.

River - Sniffer Extraordinaire

Remember the Goal

It's all for OUR dogs...

To find a producer or celeb or anyone who will help make Piper's Someday  (the book River stars in) into a movie. If you can help, contact me!

Day 56 of 365

Here's how the story begins:   (start here if you are new)

http://ruthperkinson.blogspot.com/2011/01/day-1-of-365anyone-want-to-come-along.html)

River's wags of wisdom for today: "When you are sniffing out the urinal message boards, be sure to leave a sample."

Today, I got Skype. Wow. I had no idea.

We humans communicate on a whirlwind of levels - e-mail, twitter, twitvid, youtube, facebook, skype, texts, instant messaging, and perhaps just a cell phone or even a landline.

Landline?

We are overly connected but that's okay because I love people and think it's an amazing world we live in that I can buy a fifty dollar camera, attach it to my computer, and then talk to someone in Sweden, South Africa, the Netherlands, Japan, Vietnam...you name it.

For dogs, the essence of communication is not all that much different.

Dogs are thought to pee on things like a mailbox post, or a patch of grass, or a fire hydrant because they are "marking" their territory. But, actually, they are texting each other via an incredible molecular message board. (I read this in the wordy book I'm reading about dogs.) When dogs urinate on something - anything, they are sending a message about how old they are and if they want to mate. In addition, they will signal to another dog their recent victories and how often they walk by this particular spot in the hood. Pee spots are what she calls in her book "the community center bulletin board, with old deterioriating messages peeking out from behind more recent posts of activity and successes." I'm starting to love Alexandra Horowitz for writing this book (Inside of a Dog). It's really fascinating if you can hurdle over the large words.

I imagine River says this. I'm going on nine. I have several boyfriends so my status is "I'm taken." My biggest victory is that I'm down a leg but I'm peeing write on top of this last message to say, "I'M HERE!"

The last thing River says when she pees on the community bulletin board is...

"Read my mom's book."

At least that's what I hope she might say.

Dogs have all the communication we do. They just pee on it and then the others know what the haps are in the neighborhood.

Who knew?

Love to you all today,

Ruth and River

River loves a stick...in this photo, she's looking for the neighbor. She loves to flirt with him.

River - Telling Charlie Sheen to go back to Rehab...

River's wags of wisdom for today: "Be silly with videos."

Today, River did a few more tricks...

I'm still reading the Inside of a Dog book and find the verbiage completely pedantic and love how it inculcates me with knowledge. I'll stop. It is actually a very good read as I'm learning more about the chemistry of a dog...much of which I never knew before.

So, here's a video of some knowledge and River tells us what she thinks Charlie Sheen should do.

We love you all.

Thanks for reading...more tomorrow. Of course.

Love,

Ruth and River
